Wandering Salzburg

For three of the five days of our trip we just wandered around the city exploring all of the different museums, churches, shops, and churches! On Monday, we explored the old town starting with the funicular ride up to the fortress Hohensalzburg. Construction on the fortress initially began in 1077 with the first Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. We then hiked along Mönchberg which one of the mountains surrounding the city. After lunch on the mountain, we walked around stopping at the Cathedral, the Residenz of Wolf Dietrich, Mozart's birthplace, and Geitregasse, the most popular shopping street in Salzburg!

That night for dinner I finally got to eat the traditional Austrian meal of Wiener Schnitzel with beer and potato and cucumber salad! It was delicious. After dinner, we saw a string octet at the Mozarteum for the Salzburg Music Festival. Fun fact: the music festival was started by Max Reinhardt or 'Uncle Max' in the Sound of Music. The music was absolutely incredible!

On Tuesday, we started our day with the Salzburg museum where we learned all about Austria's history and role in WWI. After the museum, we went on a river cruise down the Salzach river where and then walked around the new town on the other side of the river. Here, we explored the house where Mozart's family lived as he was growing up, St. Sebastian's church and the cemetery where Wolf Dietrich is buried, and many of the small streets that have been around for hundreds of years.

That night, we went to see the Sound of Music at the Salzburg Marionette Theater in preparation for our all day tour the next day! That day was so incredible, it deserves its own post.

Love,
